Wotc just announced a new MTG Arena format called “TIMELESS”, and it’s basically gonna be the Arena version of vintage. It’s gonna be a 60 card nonrotating constructed format, with EVERY card on the Arena client being legal, however the format will also be the first on the client to have a restricted list. Initially the only 3 cards on that list are Channel, Demonic Tutor and Tibalt’s Trickery. According to WOTC, this is based on their performance in the Historic No Banned List and Basically No Banned List events. When a card is added to the restricted list and is no longer legal in any other format, players will receive wildcards for each copy of the card in their collection greater than one, although there will not be wildcard reimbursement for the three card restrictions made with the launch of Timeless. Regarding digital only cards, we’re getting the rebalanced versions, but we’re getting the original versions of all tabletop printings. It’s going to be a competitive format, meaning we get ranked queues for both BO1 and BO3.
Timeless goes live on December 12, alongside the release of Khans of Tarkir on mtg arena, which means we’re gonna have fetch lands and delve cards right from the get go. And we’re also getting a new to Arena promo card in our in game inbox, Timeless Dragon, which is pretty flavorful, but it’s actually a card that see a bit of play in Legacy, so maybe it can in Timeless as well.
Currently, the plans for the future of the format are limited to a Metagame Challenge in the beginning of february. Anthologies like we’ve seen with Historic and Explorer, is something they’re considering, but for now they’re just gonna keep an eye on the format, and make adjustments along the way.
