Insidious Roots just got a completely new engine — and now we can turn a giant Plant into an entire new hand before throwing it at our opponent.
Today we’re playing Golgari Insidious Roots in MTG Arena Standard Best of One, powered by Tom, Bert, and William from The Hobbit.
The basic plan starts with the classic Roots engine: fill the graveyard, move creature cards out of it, create Plants and grow the entire board. But this version can take the engine much further.
Tom, Bert, and William lets us sacrifice one of our enormous Plants to draw cards equal to its power, giving us another hand to keep the engine running.
Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu allows our creatures to use their activated abilities immediately, which means newly created Plants can start producing mana as soon as they enter.
Molt Tender, Overlord of the Balemurk, Dredger’s Insight, Lluwen, Imperfect Naturalist and Agatha’s Soul Cauldron keep cards moving into and out of our graveyard while generating more Roots triggers.
Along the Crooked Way gives us another payoff for doing exactly what the deck already wants to do, and Emeritus of Abundance can recover important permanents like Insidious Roots if we accidentally mill them.
Eventually the Plants become enormous, Tom refills our hand, the engine keeps chaining — and Callous Sell-Sword // Burn Together gives us the funniest way to finish the game:
throw a gigantic Plant directly at our opponent.
