Guiding Hydra gives Selesnya +1/+1 Counters a ridiculous new engine in MTG Arena Standard! This is Ankle Biters 2.0 — an updated Selesnya Aggro build using Guiding Hydra alongside Michelangelo, Weirdness to 11 to spread huge amounts of +1/+1 counters across the battlefield.
Guiding Hydra enters with X +1/+1 counters, then lets us remove one at the beginning of combat to put a +1/+1 counter on every other creature we control. Michelangelo makes that even better by adding an additional counter whenever our creatures receive +1/+1 counters. One Hydra counter can suddenly become two counters across the entire team.
The rest of the deck is built to abuse that scaling. Warden of the Inner Sky grows into a massive flying threat, Pawpatch Recruit rewards our targeting effects, Bejeweled Warg provides trample and additional counters, Skyknight Squire continues growing our creatures, and Practiced Offense converts those oversized threats into devastating double-strike attacks.
For Ankle Biters 2.0, I’ve also tuned the list against the current Standard field. Scavenging Ooze and Kutzil’s Flanker give us graveyard interaction against reanimator strategies, while four copies of Erode help fight Kona and other problematic permanents. Surrak and Leatherhead add additional trampling threats, card advantage, and artifact/enchantment interaction.
